KMÜ is named after Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey, the founder of the Karamanid Dynasty, which ruled over the Karamanid Principality in central Anatolia from the 13th to the 15th centuries. The university was founded in 2006 by merging two existing institutions: Karaman Vocational School and Karaman Education Faculty.
