Erciyes University began as the Gevher Nesibe Medical Faculty, which opened in 1969 as an affiliation with Hacettepe University, and the Kayseri Business Administration Faculty, which opened in 1977, and became an independent university in 1978 under the name of The University of Kayseri. The other two higher education institutions in Kayseri, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Theology, were merged into the same university in 1982. The name was later changed to Erciyes University.
Mount Erciyes, which is 15 kilometers southwest of the university, inspired the name. Today, the university operates in central Anatolia, with 17 faculties, 14 vocational high schools, four institutions and nine research centers, and a highly developed research hospital with 1,000 beds. Erciyes University was founded in 1978 under the name Kayseri University.
