Studying abroad can be a great experience if done right, and getting it right requires some preparation. As a Nigerian student taking this bold step, there are four things you must do to prepare yourself before starting the study abroad process.

1. Get an International Passport

An international passport is one of the most important things you must acquire before starting the study abroad process. Your passport is the only valid travel document recognized by countries around the world, and it also serves as a means of identification. Without it, your application might not be processed. So make sure to get one as soon as you decide to start the study abroad process to avoid delays with your application.

2. Gather Your Transcript(s)

If applying for an undergraduate program, make sure you have your WAEC/NECO results readily available. Some schools require that WAEC/NECO send them official transcripts of your results using a third-party evaluation agency like WES and IERF, while others will require that you send them scratch card information so they can directly verify your results online.

If applying to a graduate program, be sure to get familiar with the process of requesting academic transcripts from any post-secondary institutions you may have attended. It is also a good idea to have an unofficial copy of your transcript as some schools can use that during the application process before receiving the official copy sent by your school.

3. Standardized Test Score

It is important you write any standardized test required for your program of study. Most schools abroad require a standard test to process your application; it is quite rare to find a school that can waive a standardized test. The acceptable standardized tests are; SAT I & II, GRE, IELTS, GMAT, and TOEFL.

4. Funding

Money is also very important in this process, you need adequate funding for your admission process, visa, housing, ticket, and so on. However, you can raise funds through savings, student loans, scholarships, sponsorships and you could also apply for any fully-funded programs.
